Upcoming RPG Games 2025: Top Title and Their Release Date

Numerous outstanding RPGs have been released in 2024, with the most notable titles being Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Metaphor: ReFantazio. As we approach the end of 2024, it’s time to look ahead to the exciting RPGs set to be released in 2025.

The RPG genre is incredibly broad, encompassing a wide range of definitions and styles. RPGs can be turn-based or action-oriented, and both Western and Japanese RPGs have their unique characteristics.

However, one common element unites them: a strong emphasis on storytelling and character development. As the name suggests, “Role-Playing Games” allow you to immerse yourself in the role of the main character within your own world.

In this article, we will distinguish RPGs from MMORPGs due to their different natures. Here are the top upcoming RPGs to look forward to in 2025.

1. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Recently, many developers have shifted from traditional turn-based games to action RPGs. However, Expedition 33 stands out by offering a unique twist on the RPG genre.

It introduces an innovative gameplay experience with its reactive turn-based battle system, which requires players to time their inputs for both attacks and defenses.

This blend of traditional turn-based mechanics with a more dynamic, action-oriented approach sets Expedition 33 apart from conventional titles.

The trailer has been praised for its stunning visuals, compelling plot, and phenomenal soundtrack, not to mention the inclusion of several star talents such as Charlie Cox, Jennifer English, Andy Serkis, and Kirsty Rider, positioning them as one of the most anticipated RPGs of 2025.

3. Ghost of Yotei

Ghost of Tsushima took the gaming world by storm in 2020, and fans have been eagerly waiting for a sequel ever since. Now, their patience has finally paid off! Ghost of Yotei was announced during PlayStation’s State of Play presentation on September 24, 2024.

This new action-adventure game is a standalone sequel to Ghost of Tsushima and is set to release in 2025 for the PlayStation 5.

Set hundreds of years after the events of Tsushima, Ghost of Yotei takes place in the northern region of Japan, Hokkaido. The game features a female protagonist named Atsu, who has taken up the mantle of the Ghost.

Much like the first game, players will have the freedom to choose the paths Atsu takes, but Yotei promises even more flexibility in how her story unfolds.

Ghost of Yotei was nominated for the Most Anticipated Game at the 2024 Game Awards, though it was ultimately beaten by the highly anticipated GTA 6.

8. Assassin’s Creed Shadows

When I think about franchises on a downward trend, Assassin’s Creed is at the top of my list. I don’t have high expectations for the next game, but it’s Assassin’s Creed, so I hope it surprises us and makes a strong comeback!

Assassin’s Creed: Shadows is set in 16th-century Japan during the late Sengoku period. The story follows two protagonists: Naoe, a skilled shinobi assassin, and Yasuke, an African samurai.

The game emphasizes stealth and parkour, allowing players to switch between characters, each with unique abilities. Naoe uses a Hidden Blade and grappling hook for stealth, while Yasuke engages in direct combat with heavy weaponry. Let’s hope this game is what the franchise needs to revive its glory days!
